Mental Health Navigator
The statistics on mental health are alarming. Nearly half of us will experience mental illness at some point in our lives - that’s around 7.3 million people. On top of this, COVID-19 is having a further devastating impact. In March Lifeline answered close to 90,000 calls for help. That’s a 25 per cent increase over the same time last year – the equivalent of one call every 30 seconds1.
And while mental illness is more widely talked about and accepted 54% who do experience mental illness don’t access any treatment.^
Mental Health Navigator is a service that navigates people through the complex mental health system from the comfort of their home, connecting them with a network of leading psychologists and psychiatrists in Australia. It a discreet, quick and confidential way to seek help if you are experiencing a mental health condition such as depression or anxiety.
According to Professor Bernhard Baune, Head of the Department of Psychiatry at The University of Melbourne, “Best Doctors Mental Health Navigator can easily bring together the right team to complete a detailed assessment and provide expert opinion in regarding a members’ condition, diagnosis and treatment plan and ultimately help improve patient outcomes.”
How Best Doctors has made a difference
Linda is 40 and lives in Melbourne. She’s battled depression, anxiety and panic disorder for 20 years. Married with two children, she was desperate to get well because her illness left her unable to leave her house.
She underwent counselling with different psychiatrists and psychologists and tried different antidepressant medications, with no success.
“I was so exhausted with my illness and not getting the right help,”
It was only after Linda, connected with Best Doctors’ Mental Health Navigator programme - through her insurance with MLC Life Insurance - that her life started to turn around. A Best Doctors psychiatrist and clinical psychologist reviewed her situation and provided an opinion in regard to her treatment plan, medication and therapy. And with the support of a Best Doctors mental health nurse Linda went back to her GP to implement a new treatment plan.
Linda credits the support and guidance provided by Best Doctors’ Mental Health Navigator programme with improving her quality of life, including restoring her relationship with her husband and children.
“I wouldn’t be here today without Mental Health Navigator’s help.”
Simon is in his 40’s and after a recent relationship break up experienced low moods, loss of weight, difficulty sleeping and loss of motivation. Simon was diagnosed with depression by his doctor and commenced on antidepressant therapy.
His symptoms had not improved, so he contacted Best Doctors’ Mental Health Navigator to get a second opinion on diagnosis and best treatment recommendations. Simon runs his own small business and had missed approximately 20 days of work in a month because he was feeling so sad and anxious.
Best Doctors' Mental Health Navigator opened his case and he underwent a comprehensive assessment with a psychiatrist, virtually. The findings diagnosed Major Depressive disorder and Adjustment disorder. The treatment recommendations was 10 sessions of psychological counselling and increase in Sertraline, an antidepressant of the selective serotonin reuptake inhibitor (SSRI) class, to 150mg daily.
6 months after Simon’s case was opened, he stated that he was very well and not experiencing any anxiety. His home life is good, and work is going well. Simon has now finished his psychotherapy as he no longer needs it and is not taking antidepressant therapy as his mood is euthymic.
